Three Cheers for the Red, White & Blue
|
With summer coming on strong and two patriotic holidays just behind us and another soon on it’s way, I think it’s worth spending a little time discussing patriotic quilts. This is, however, an apology to any readers who aren’t from the USA, Britain, or any other countries that have a flag of a different color. Sorry!
People can make patriotic quilts to express their love for their country in a creative way. Red, white, and blue quilts can be a way to honor loved ones who have served in the military, celebrate holidays, or show patriotic pride in the home.
|
Women have always made quilts that symbolized their own patriotic sentiments. Before women got the vote in 1920 and were fighting for those rights, they didn’t have an official forum for voicing their views and quilting provided a a way to show their love for their country. Quilt displays at agricultural fairs, for example, offered prime opportunities for a woman to express her opinions.

Reasons you might want to consider a Red, White & Blue quilt
|
1 - Celebrate Holidays
RW&B quilts can be fun decorations for your home to celebrate holidays like Memorial Day, Flag Day, or the Fourth of July. They can also be displayed in homes on national holidays. Thrown over a sofa or hanging on a wall, these can be a terrific way to add instant color for occasions.

These two quilts are both examples of Log Cabin quilts. The red one has many variations and the darker one has four blocks with the base square in the center for a different look.

2 - Express Patriotism
Quilts can be a way to express patriotism and connect with American history and heritage. Symbols of national pride are a part of this country’s decorative heritage. Since the early nineteenth century, American women have been fashioning quilts with images now commonly associated with independence and patriotism.
In the early nineteenth century you will start seeing eagles and shields in quilts. Women often incorporated decorative pieces of fabric into their quilts, such as sashes, banners, and flags to make commemorative examples more distinctive. Unlike other types of quilts, which can vary depending on fads, colors and fashions, patriotic quilts will always have value.

Now numerous panels and patterns are available to add emphasis to a purely patriotic quilt.

3 - Honor Military Service
Quilts can be made to honor your family members or friends who have been military veterans or service members, or to recognize those who have been touched by war.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation is an all-volunteer organization that has awarded almost a quarter million handmade quilts to honor military service. They accept nominations for worthy recipients, accept quilt donations to present to vets, and accept donations for materials for the project. Today’s Tip - Designing Patriotic Quilts
|
-
Choose a Patriotic Color Palette: Stick to traditional patriotic colors like red, white, and blue to create a classic look. Consider incorporating different shades and tones of these colors to add depth and interest. You can also include subtle variations like navy, cream, or burgundy to give your quilt a unique twist while maintaining the patriotic theme.
-
Incorporate Iconic Symbols and Patterns: Use iconic symbols such as stars, stripes, and flags in your quilt design. These can be included through fabric prints or pieced quilt blocks. Patterns like the log cabin, star blocks, or even appliqué techniques can effectively highlight patriotic motifs and give your quilt a recognizable theme.
-
Add Personal Touches and Historical Elements: Incorporate personal touches that have significance to you or the intended recipient. This could be through the use of fabrics with meaningful prints, such as military or state symbols. Adding historical elements, like vintage fabrics or reproductions of historical quilt blocks, can enhance the quilt's patriotic feel and add a rich narrative layer to the design.
These tips will help you create a beautiful and distinctive patriotic quilt.
