Last time I mentioned that I was off to Salt Lake City to judge quilts at the Utah State Fair. I took pictures of some examples that caught my attention. Please realize that I was taking pictures of the quilts as they were laying down on the big tables where they were piled in categories, so they aren’t the greatest photos, but I hope that they give you a good idea of the kind of quilts that were entered this year.
This quilt on top was a delightful homespun and wool appliqué with embroidery. We all loved the details and the beautiful work

Kaffee Fassett fabrics were popular, as usual. The vibrant colors are hard to resist.
There were lots of cute patchwork/appliqué examples.
This Civil War reproduction quilt makes great use of the distinctive colors of this group of fabrics.
And I liked the interesting use of sampler blocks with the Log Cabin setting of this one.
We often see Redwork, but were delighted to see Bluework for these snowman embroidered blocks.
This Patriotic Sampler is so interesting and appealing.
We loved this unique alphabet sampler, but were somewhat confused by the arrangement of the letters?
This incredible work included lots of lovely machine embroidery.
This gorgeous appliqué border set off the rainbow of half squares in the center
The picot edge and multi-colored binding added to this Spring themed beauty.
What a creative use of vintage dish towels. The creator even included vintage wear and use.
We didn’t see much hand quilting, but this whole cloth quilt was a big WOW!
This super creative one block wonder using a Klimt print fabric was so visually stimulating. Note the tiny aqua flange around the binding.
These striking colors and the appliqué added a lot to this star quilt. The points are really tricky when you have so many pieces coming together.
We even saw a pair of quilted sneakers!

Today’s Tip - Quilting for the Fair
-
Follow the Rules and Guidelines: Carefully read and follow the entry rules for the fair. Each fair may have specific guidelines regarding size, techniques, themes, or fabric types. Double-check deadlines and any display requirements to avoid disqualification.
-
Choose a Strong Design: Go for a design that stands out but also showcases your skills. Judges often look for creativity, but they also value technical excellence. Complex patterns, intricate piecing, or unique layouts can help your quilt attract attention.
-
Precision is Key: Pay attention to the small details like seam accuracy, consistent stitching, and sharp corners. Judges will look closely at these technical aspects. Block alignment, clean edges, and smooth seams will make a big difference in the final assessment.
-
Use Quality Materials: Invest in high-quality fabrics, batting, and thread. Well-made materials not only look better but also make your quilt more durable. Superior materials can enhance the overall appearance, giving your quilt a more polished and professional finish.
-
Perfect Your Finishing Touches: Quilting, binding, and overall finishing should be flawless. Even spacing in quilting stitches, a clean and even binding, and neatly trimmed threads will impress the judges. Pay attention to blocking your quilt so it lies flat, with no wrinkles or puckering.
These tips will help ensure your quilt is fair-ready, showcasing your skills and creativity!
